What is Vooks?
Vooks is an app that has a large streaming library of animated read aloud storybooks for children anywhere from ages 2-8. The app offers a safe and ad-free place for kids to have story books read to them so that they can fall in love with reading.
It is no secret that kids love being read to and it has a huge impact on their development and literacy. With the Vooks app, not only do they get the story read aloud to them, but they also get to see the story come to life through the animated stories.
Vooks is also a great way for kids to get some quality screen time in. With the Vooks app they will be strengthening their vocabulary, reading skills, and fluency as they listen to the storybook being read to them and follow along.
What kind of books are included?
Their library consists of a variety of different subjects and interests so you are sure to find something they will enjoy listening to. Currently, there are 90+ books that are available in the library. Amazing right?!
As you look at their library, you will see that the books are broken up into different ages (preschool and elementary) and themed categories (seasonal, animals, or classics, etc.). In addition to browsing the different books that are available, they also offer a search function. This will allow them to bring up recommended books based on the topic you are searching for, and help your kids find exactly what they’re interested in! One of Mila’s favorites is called “Unicorn”. I mean, obviously, right?
And the People Stayed Home
One of their brand new titles, just added last week is called “And the People Stayed Home”. Through this book, and beautiful illustrations, it tells the story of the global pandemic that we are currently experiencing. The read aloud book focuses on hope and beauty as we face such a strange and scary time of our lives right now. I love that it takes an otherwise tumultuous time, and finds the silver linings of it to pave the way for our future. All we can do is think of the positives and ways that we can re-frame things in an optimistic way for our kids, and this book captures that wonderfully.
Why you should get Vooks?
It is an ad-free storybook app that is safe for children of all ages to use. Children will love being engaged with the story as they follow along and watch the animations. The app is easy for children to use and they can browse, search, and save books of interest. It is a great way for those who struggle with reading or non-readers to follow along and help with word recognition as they practice reading. For Mila’s homeschooling, we have been doing a ton of work on sight words, so this is just another fun way for her to work on her word recognition.
How do I get Vooks?
The Vooks app can be downloaded through your favorite app store. It is also accessible on your computer, Roku, and Amazon FireTV. We use it on both our laptop and on the kids’ tablets.
There is a charge of $4.99 a month, which you can cancel anytime, or $49.99 a year. If you want to check it out before you commit to a subscription, they also offer a free 30-day trial of unlimited streaming! You’re not stuck with a commitment so you can cancel your subscription any time you want.
